Michigan Fly Fishing Guides
Schmidt Outfitters offers the best in destination fly fishing guide services for Michigan steelhead, king salmon, coho salmon, trout and smallmouth bass. From our location in Wellston, Michigan we are in the heart of the Manistee National Forest, and are challenged by some of the most intense fishing in the country. Our intent is to share the experience of that challenge with you.
The Century Circle
The Century Circle is a 100-mile radius of backwoods, wildlife, ponds, streams, and rivers that rival any area you've experienced. Trout, steelhead, and salmon populate the waters in this area. From our location in the center of this circle, we'll guide you on rivers such as the Big Manistee, Pine, Little Manistee, Bear Creek, and Pere Marquette.
Fly Fishing Only
As it was when Ray and Angie Schmidt started in 1976, Schmidt Outfitters is driven by a passion to provide a first-class experience. To continue to ensure that, we support fly fishing only with a catch-and-release policy. Our children deserve the same quality outdoor experience that we have.
Our goal is to be the best at what we do. From hot stream-side lunches to world-class gear to outstanding watercraft to fly fishing experience and knowledge, we will exceed your expectations. Nothing is less than first class. We cannot, however, control the weather or the fish bite, but we're working on them.
Our guide fee is $350.00 per day. This includes non-alcoholic beverages, a shore meal, and snacks. Our professional fly fishing guides also provide fishing gear that you may need for the day on the water.
To ensure the finest in personal attention, we accept a maximum of two anglers per guide. Our fee of $350.00 covers a full day (around 8 hours). We do not include flies, but our shop and guides are fully stocked with the flies you need. The fee does not include gratuities or a Michigan fishing license. Just a note on guide gratuities: A gratuity (tip) is tradition in the fly fishing world. "A good ghillie gets a bump at the end of a good day fishing". The guidelines for the "bump" is between 15 to 20 percent or more per day. Remember a gratuity is for good service, not piles of fish. There is a great article on guide gratuities by Marshall Cutchin at Midcurrent for guidelines on tipping both domestically and abroad.
We require a $200 deposit when you make your reservation. If you cancel your trip within 60 days of its date, and we cannot rebook the date, we expect full payment for the trip. If we rebook the guide, the deposit is your only payment. Deposits are not refundable or transferable.
