"The Skunk Hopper evolved from Earl Madsen's Skunk that was developed in northern Michigan in the 1930s. The Skunk was and still is one of the favorite big dry flies on the AuSable system. The original Skunk had a tail of white calf tail, black chenille body, heavy deer hair wing, and rubber legs. The Skunk Hopper uses the same tail, although in red, and incorporates modern Crystal Antron Chenille for the body, a very dense premium elk hair wing, and realistic round rubber legs complete with tied 'knee.' The Crystal Antron Chenille absorbs far less water than the old Rayon Chenille. This pattern is a good mix of both realism and impression. Smack it on the water and let the fish hear it. Let it float in a dead drift and give it a little twitch, kicking the legs. Hang on!"
