Argentina Fly Fishing Travel Vacation
Are the fish you’re after in the rivers or mounted and displayed in some lodge?
Recently, as the popularity of fly fishing has increased, so has the number of outfitters offering travel packages to some of Argentina’s excellent lodges. Fly Maniacs, our host outfitter based in Bariloche, does things a bit differently. Instead of travel packages built around a featured lodge, our friends at Fly Maniacs create an itinerary based on seasonal river conditions to provide you with exceptional fishing. January is summer in Argentina and the quest for trout may include moonlit riverbank camping or a float trip along a pristine stretch of river with a snow-capped mountain view. If you’re serious about fly fishing Argentina’s Patagonia waters, this is an unforgettable outdoor experience.
Fish the Argentine Patagonia
Located in the southern part of the Andes Mountain region of Latin America, the Patagonian portion of the Andes includes the southernmost five Argentine provinces of Neuquen, Rio Negro, Chubut, Santa Cruz, and Tierra del Fuego. The length of this region is over 1,250 miles. The Patagonian fishing season opens in mid-November and closes in mid-April.
The weather of the Patagonian Region varies extensively; wet and cold in the mountainous regions in the west, with the prairie to huge desert-like areas in the eastern portion of the provinces. Cold water glacier lakes, in which many of the headwaters for most of the area's famous crystal clear rivers begin, spot this region. Many of these rivers are interconnected, forming a system that provides hundreds of miles of fishable waters. Trout were first introduced in this area in the beginning of this century. Here, wild populations of brown, rainbow, and brook trout as well as landlocked Atlantic salmon have reached average sizes well above that found anywhere else in the world.
In summer (Jan-Feb) lows range between 60 F and 75 F and highs 75-95 F. The weather is very moderate, and rains are extremely rare. These long days on easily wadeable rivers are dry fly time, and caddis and mayfly hatches put trout on the move almost everywhere.
The riverbanks are covered with willows, which have a significant role in the overall river and trout ecosystem, protecting them from erosion and giving refuge to numerous trout and their food supply.
The foothills area where most of your fishing will take place will remind you of the eastern part of Montana, Wyoming, and Idaho. Although the seasons are reversed, those areas will be covered with snow and ice while you fish our warm and almost rainless summer.
