Michigan Fly Fishing Report

Hex bugs are on...everywhere! Cooler weather this week will slow the activity!

June 29, 2009

Streamers are hot! Hatches this week are  The Giant Mayfly (hexigenia) , BWO's, Sulphurs, Amber Stones and Tan Caddis.

Manistee River - Below Tippy Dam

Streamer fishing for Brown Trout is very good. Our guides report lots of fish this year in the 12 to 16 inch range and a few big boys. Best color right now has been white, like Zoo Cougar, Madonna, Wooly Schulpin and Rattlesnake.

Trout are now coming to the dry fly and fishing an Elk Hair Caddis and a soft hackle combo is very productive.

Manistee River - Below Hodenpyl Dam

Hex bugs are on the lower section.

This section is one of Michigan's gems. Lots of bugs here as no chemicals are used to control lamprey. Streamer fishing right now is best.

This section is had it's share of troubles in the past couple years. The fish loss due to thermal shock was dramatic last year. We expect a far better year this year for a couple reasons. First the DNR has re-stocked this section and second the power company has a mandate to release cool water from the newly installed bubbler system. This system sends cool water into the tailrace when river tempatures reach 70 degrees.

Visit the USGS Big Manistee River Water Flow Data (USGS) for detailed water flow information, graphs and charts. We also have an information page on the Manistee River

Upper Manistee

(By Guide Brian Pitser) Water temps in upper 50’s (59) and the fishing is steady on dries.  Water is still coming down from the rains earlier this week, slightly stained and still up 6 inches or so-ideal.  Caddis, sulphers, yellow stones the best bet right now as seeker patterns.  Roberts yellow drakes, yellow sally’s and borcher’s fishing well and bigger fish looking up at the yellow stones, size 8-10.  Last night there was a great sulpher emergence with shots at larger fish on duns.  Great mayflies at dusk in the air-march brown’s and isonychia’s but no spinner fall.  Warm days are setting up for some great spinner fall action, but evening temperatures will determine bug activity.  Last night it dropped too fast.  Should continue to get better this week with a warmer forecast on the books.

Grand Traverse Bay

(By Guide Brian Pitser) Traverse Bay carp and smallmouth action is seriously behind schedule. Water temps are in the mid to upper 50’s, depending on wind direction.  Finding carp in the warmer flats on east and west bay closer to town.  Fishing at Mission Penninsula is picking up as well.  Smallies are hanging off the drop off in a pre spawn mode.  Most of the carp are cruising and not feeding, but will track a fly and turn off.  We found a few eaters in the larger cruising pod (6-10 fish) eating out of competition, rather than tail up, head down digging for food.  In the next week it should start to get going with the warmer forecast.

Pere Marquette River Report

Trout fishing is in full swing. The river is up and discolored at this time... perfect. Streamer fishing is very good.  Hex Bugs on the lower and the following on the rest of the river, Little Yellow Stones, BWO's, Sulphurs and Caddis are the top water picks right now. Check with our friends at Baldwin Bait and Tackle for a full PM fishing report.www.fishbaldwin.com

Pine River Report

River is back fishable again as of 6/22/09. Little Yellow Stones and Caddis is the right picks for top water. Nymphs and streamers are the daytime picks.

Pine River

Little Manistee Report

Streamer fishing is on fire right now, get out there!  BWO's, Sulphurs and Caddis most every evening. Hex bugs to come on the lower river.

Bear Creek Report

Flows are up and the river is dark! The Bear is a great trout, steelhead and salmon stream and should not be overlooked. Right now it's trout, trout and more trout. We like to dry fly fish this river and it has great hatches. Hex, Sulphurs BWO's and Caddis are this weeks picks. Get more info on Bear Creek
